Season 2 of Outback Opal Hunters filmed in Lightning Ride (NSW), Opalton (QLD),  Coober Pedy (SA) and Laverton (WA) begins on Discovery Channel in late January.

Season 1 teams The Rookies, Col’s Crew, The Cooke Brothers, and The Opal Queen are joined by The Fire Crew, a family risking their life savings hoping to strike it in Western Australia.

With five teams operating across four states, Outback Opal Hunters follows their roller-coaster ride of hope and heartbreak as they measure themselves each day against the vastness of the country’s harsh landscapes. Along the way they must confront cunning gem dealers, wild pilots, grizzled veterans, and untamed outback characters as the season brings new machines, new mines, and new challenges. Old friendships will fall apart, new friends will be found and a fortune in opal with be unearthed, all in the brutal Australian Outback.

The Rookies Daniel Becker and Justin Lang smashed their target last season in Coober Pedy. No long total fresh-faced novices they are upping their target this season to $150,000. But they have to learn the harsh realities of mining when they face unexpected challenges from the get go.

Col’s Crew – Col Duff, Aaron Grotjahn and Greg Geran – are still living off the grid in Opalton, this time digging a massive pit at legendary claim Dragonfly. Hoping for a massive payday and with a hulking bulldozer and excavator to fund they have increased their target six-fold to $120,000.

Following a bad season last year, The Cooke Brothers – Peter and Mick – from Lightning Ridge are keen to make up for lost time with new drill “Dragon” and new keen as mustard apprentice, Sam Westra.

The Opal Queen from Lightning Ridge, Kelly Tishler returns with some muscle; her brother-in-law Mark Tishler and expert digger Dwayne Hanrahan. This time they are heading underground for the most valuable opal in the world: Black opal.

New team, The Fire Crew are hunting a fortune from their off the grid camp in Laverton, deep in the Western Australia Outback. Firefighter Adam Piromanski, his partner HR consultant Cassidy Ricketts and Adam’s prospecting parents Peter and Vikki Piromanski have invested all their savings on a quest to find rare Fire opal.

Opals are one of the most valuable gemstones in market and 90% of the world’s entire supply is found in Australia. With world prices doubling every five years a single piece can be worth millions of dollars. Out here anyone can make a fortune… if they can find it.

Thursdays from 31 January at 8:30pm on Discovery Channel.

Australian actress Samara Weaving has been released from SMILF following a complaint she made about having to perform a sex scene naked.

Weaving made a complaint to actress Rose O’Donnell and a director during Season Two of the ABC Studios production. Weaving and co-star Miguel Gomez were eventually told they could film the scene in their underwear.

ABC completed an investigation into alleged misconduct by Frankie Shaw, creator and star of the series, but concluded that there had been no wrongdoing on Shaw’s part.

Weaving was released from her contract at her request, and is not expected to join the show for a potential third season.

Shaw has also been accused of discriminatory behaviour toward the show’s African-American writers but maintains, “I am now and always have been open to hearing and addressing all concerns and issues that fall within my control. It pains me to learn that anyone felt uncomfortable on my set. I sincerely hope we can work together to resolve any and all issues, as I am committed to creating a workplace in which all people feel safe and heard.”

SMILF airs in Australia on Stan.

Nine’s annual retrospective special What A Year! looking at the past 12 months will screen this Sunday.

Scott Cam and Leila McKinnon will host from the roof terrace of The Block in Melbourne, with Tracy Grimshaw, Sylvia Jeffreys, Richard Wilkins and David Campbell all fronting individual segments on news, sport, local TV, Music, Royals, movies.

And what a year 2018 has been! From the Test cricket sandpaper scandal that ruined the careers of some of Australia’s biggest sporting stars to the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, there has rarely been a dull moment. If there was, then you could always count on US President Donald Trump to spice things up.

What A Year takes viewers on a rollercoaster ride through the year, trying to make sense of it all. There are the award ceremonies from the Oscars to the Logies; the top movies of the year and of course the TV shows that kept us glued to the screen.

We feature the best moments of A Current Affair that resonated with Australians, and have a laugh at the viral clips. On a heavier note, 2018 also generated headlines for plenty of the wrong reasons, including several mass shootings in America and heartbreaking crimes here at home.

Former CBS Chairman & CEO Les Moonves has been denied the $120m (AU$167m) severance payout he expected after stepping down under allegations of misconduct by the network’s Board.

CBS cites termination and breach of contract as reason to withhold.

“The Board of Directors of CBS has completed its investigation of former Chairman and CEO Leslie Moonves, CBS News, and cultural issues at CBS,” the company said in a statement. “With regard to Mr. Moonves, we have determined that there are grounds to terminate for cause, including his willful and material misfeasance, violation of Company policies and breach of his employment contract, as well as his willful failure to cooperate fully with the Company’s investigation. Mr. Moonves will not receive any severance payment from the Company.”

Moonves resigned in September, after The New Yorker published a report detailing new allegations by six women spanning from the 1980s to the 2000s, including claims he forced women to perform oral sex on him and that he exposed himself to them.

The women’s accusations were similar to those made by six other women, who claimed they were subjected Moonves’ to unwelcome sexual advances and suffered professional retaliation when they rebuffed the now-disgraced television executive.

Moonves, a company man of 24 years who had a knack for picking hit shows like Survivor and The Big Bang Theory, acknowledged three encounters before his tenure at CBS, but said they were consensual.

He is now expected to take take legal action over severance monies.

Larrikin drama Les Norton for ABC

Rebel Wilson and David Wenham will head up the cast of a new 10 part ABC drama, Les Norton.

Based on the novels by Robert G. Barrett the series follow the exploits of Les Norton, a country bloke from outback Queensland in 1985. On the run from a troubled past, he blows into Sydney where he lands a job as a bouncer at a notorious illegal casino in Kings Cross. A classic fish out of water who’s desperate to get home, he soon finds himself seduced by the city’s illicit charms and dragged into a web of underground criminality.

The title role is to be played by Alexander Bertrand (pictured, Australian Gangster, Hide & Seek).

Produced by Daniel Edwards and John Edwards from Roadshow Rough Diamond, it will be directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse (The Dressmaker, Proof), Fadia Abboud (Australian Gangster), David Caesar (Dead Lucky, Underbelly) and Morgan O’Neill (Drift, Solo).

It has been created for television by Morgan O’Neill, working alongside writers Christopher Lee (Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo), Samantha Winston (Wentworth), Shanti Gudgeon (Wolf Creek), Malcolm Knox (Romper Stomper), and Jessica Tuckwell.

“Les and his reprobate mates are caught up in a Sydney that was at its most debauched in the ‘80s, and the show’s blackly hilarious as a consequence,” John Edwards said.

ABC’s Sally Riley says: “We are over the moon that Les Norton has lured such a stellar cast and creative team to bring the novels to life. Les Norton is shaping up to be an enviable addition to the ABC’s 2019 drama slate”.

Head of Content at Screen Australia, Sally Caplan said: “Les Norton is an affable character that has proven popular with audiences in the best-selling book series. What excites me about this TV adaptation is that the creative team have included a slew of new female roles to go head on with the male characters established in the books.”

Create NSW Acting Director of Screen Investment, Engagement & Attraction Sally Regan said, “This adaptation of Robert G. Barrett’s classic Aussie larrikin character will undoubtedly bring a smile to a wide audience across the country. Backed by a strong production team, Robert’s popular books are perfect for screen adaptation and we look forward to seeing Les’ ‘fish out of water’ escapades unfold.”

Les Norton is a Roadshow Rough Diamond production for the ABC. Major production investment from Screen Australia and the ABC, in association with Create NSW. International sales by Sonar Entertainment Distribution. ABC Head of Drama, Comedy & Indigenous Sally Riley will work as Executive Producer with Andrew Gregory; Deeper Water Films’ John Schwarz and Michael Schwarz; and John Singleton and Jack Singleton.

Seven rules out Blake Mysteries for 2019

$
0
0

EXCLUSIVE: Seven is not proceeding with more of The Blake Mysteries in 2019, all but signalling the end for the Doctor Blake franchise.

The network has cited lack of time slots in its 2019 schedule as the reason behind its decision.

A Seven spokesperson told TV Tonight, “The Blake Mysteries performed very well. The numbers keep building and confirm the commercial success of the movie length episode. The cast delivered superb performances, developing the continuous story themes beautifully.

“At this stage, our 2019 schedule is firming up and we simply don’t have appropriate time slots for a series.”

Sadly the show, and indeed the network, has been caught up in events working against it.

After the December Media show was axed by ABC, Seven threw it a lifeline with a plan for 4 telemovies. But following headlines involving star Craig McLachlan it scaled back to one telemovie with Nadine Garner as the newly-wedded Jean Blake, testing the waters as the lead in “A New Beginning.”

Isolated on the final Friday in the ratings year the drama was certainly up against it.

It drew 450,000 in overnight viewers and another 143,000 in 7 day timeshifted viewing -a not-unexpected result given it had no series momentum and limited audience awareness. But it was a long way from the 900,000 plus who had backed the show on ABC.

Despite the initial backing of the franchise, Seven’s dilemma has been twofold: the unforeseen absence of its leading man at the same time as it greenlit another ABC spin-off in Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries.

Suddenly the network found itself with 2 mystery dramas, both with female sleuths in Victoria in the 1960s. But only one was dogged by headlines.

The news will disappoint loyal “Blake Army” international fans whose passion for the show, with social media campaigns and petitions, was crucial to the show’s future at Seven. Their support for McLachlan, yet to face any police charges, has been unwavering. Despite being torn over their high regard for Nadine Garner it has only ever been McLachlan they want to see in the title role.

Now it appears untested allegations from a stage production in Adelaide have killed off any hope of either doing just that.

Garner will be seen in 2019 in 10’s upcoming comedy Mr. Black alongside Stephen Curry, while McLachlan’s defamation case begins in February.

Updated: Producers Tony Wright and George Adams  said, “What a personal privilege it’s been to bring you this show from Season one until now, and what a delight it was to create this telemovie for Channel 7.

“Nadine Garner and the entire cast and crew were indeed superb. Once again, thanks to all of you who got behind it.”

Actress Penny Marshall, best known for Laverne & Shirley, has died aged 75.

Marshall’s publicist said the actress and director passed away in her home in the Hollywood Hills on Monday due to complications from diabetes.

“Our family is heartbroken,” the Marshall family said in a statement. They called her “a tomboy who loved sports, doing puzzles of any kind, drinking milk and Pepsi together and being with her family.”

“Penny was a girl from the Bronx, who came out West, put a cursive ‘L’ on her sweater and transformed herself into a Hollywood success story. We hope her life continues to inspire others to spend time with family, work hard and make all of their dreams come true.”

Marshall first appeared as Milwaukee brewery worker Laverne DeFazio in Happy Days alongside Cindy Williams before both were granted their own sitcom. Airing from 1976 to 1983 Laverne & Shirley was among the biggest hits of its era.

Her other TV credits included The Odd Couple playing Myrna from 1972- 1974, The Jackie Gleeson Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Love American Style,  Mary Tyler Moore, Love Thy Neighbour, Entourage, Bones, Frasier, Portlandia, Nash Bridges, Murder Police and The Odd Couple reboot.

Marshall also became a notable director making her feature film directorial debut in Jumpin’ Jack Flash, starring Whoopi Goldberg.

She would go on to becom the first woman to direct a film that grossed more than $US100 million in 1988’s Big, then A League of Their Own, Awakenings, and The Preacher’s Wife.

Ex husband director Rob Reiner said Marshall was “born with a great gift”.

“She was born with a funny bone and the instinct of how to use it. I was very lucky to have lived with her and her funny bone. I will miss her,” he said on Twitter.

Tom Hanks also tweeted, “Goodbye, Penny. Man, did we laugh a lot! Wish we still could. Love you. Hanx.”

Fellow director and Happy Days star Ron Howard remembered Marshall as a creative talent who had made a major impact on both the film and television industry, all the while staying “relaxed, funny and totally unpretentious.”

Nine dumps Karl Stefanovic from Today

Karl Stefanovic has been dumped from Today after 14 years as host.

He will remain with Nine as host of This Time Next Year.

The news follows low ratings, 2 years of headlines around his personal life, and the exit of brother Peter Stefanovic yesterday.

Darren Wick, Director of News and Current Affairs said, “Nine and Karl Stefanovic have agreed it is time for him to step off the Today show. Karl remains on contract with the network and will continue to host This Time Next Year, which records in February.

“For over 14 years Karl has been at the centre of the Today Show bringing his unique personality and perspective to the day’s news and current affairs.”

Karl Stefanovic said: “For the last 14 years I’ve co-hosted the best show on television. I can’t thank Nine enough for the opportunity. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be good enough to host this grand show for so long.

“Thanks to our viewers mostly, you are what matters most. It’s been a tough time. Thanks for hanging in there. I look forward to seeing you in another capacity at this great Network soon.”

Today is under review by incoming executive producer Steve Burling, amid suggestions other names could go. Media is speculating about Richard Wilkins, Sylvia Jeffreys and Tim Gilbert, although Nine has denied some reportage.

“An announcement on the new line up and format of the Today show will be made in the coming weeks,” said Wick.

Sylvia Jeffreys next to leave Today?

Nine has today backed Sylvia Jeffreys as part of its Nine News family, but failed to confirm her as part of the Today show.

Responding to various media speculation, broken first by Peter Ford on 6PR, Darren Wick, Nine’s Director of News and Currents Affairs said, “Sylvia Jeffreys is a huge part of Nine’s plans for 2019 and beyond. She is contracted with Nine until the end of 2020. Any reports or speculation that she is leaving Nine are incorrect.

“She is a gifted, hard-working journalist and presenter and we look forward to continuing to work with her.”

Jeffreys has been with Today since 2012, marrying ex-Nine presenter Peter Stefanovic last year.

Just hours ago, Nine confirmed Karl Stefanovic had been dumped from the show.

Speculation this week also surrounds Richard Wilkins’ ongoing role amid suggestions he may focus on Today Extra. Nine confirmed he would remain part of the Today family and network.

TV Tonight has asked Nine if Jeffreys will remain with Today.

Season 5 of Luther, starring Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson, will screen on BBC First from early February.

The 4 part series by writer Neil Cross will debut in the UK on January 1, which looks like we are in for another year of slow-tracking from BBC First.

BBC First is not Foxtel-owned but as a premium drama channel this needs improvement in 2019.

When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther once again confronts the depths of human depravity.

As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit DS Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror.

But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther faces the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect, and who to sacrifice.

Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him – and will change John Luther forever.

Directed by Sam Miller (Cardiac Arrest, The Life) the series also stars Wunmi Mosaku (The End of the F**king World, Vera, Dancing on the Edge) who joins the cast as Luther’s sidekick Catherine Halliday, Hermione Norris (Cold Feet, Spooks), Patrick Malahide (Game of Thrones) and Dermot Crowley (Stars Wars: Return of the Jedi).

Sundays at 8.30pm from February 3 on BBC First.

Actor Lillian Crombie (pictured) and daughter Elaine Crombie, visual artist Robert Fielding and son Zaachariaha Fielding, and dancers Taree and Caleena Sansbury are will feature in an upcoming iview documentary series Deadly Family Portraits.

The 2019 short docs are part of an initiative of the South Australian Film Corporation, ABC Arts iView and Arts South Australia, to showcase artistic talent among Aboriginal families and emerging  filmmakers.

SAFC Aboriginal Screen Strategy Consultant, Lee-Ann Buckskin said “This is an amazing opportunity to nurture the careers of extraordinary up and coming Aboriginal directors and producers alongside such inspiring Aboriginal artists, while creating compelling and insightful viewing for a national audience.”

An initiative of the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC), ABC Arts iView and Arts South Australia, each episode in the Deadly Family Portraits series will be produced by an Aboriginal filmmaking team to create an intriguing conversation between artist and filmmaker; as they reflect upon identity, culture, life, art, country and family. Each film will be under 10 minutes and will premiere on ABC iview in 2019.

Selected filmmaking teams, who have already completed the first phase of workshop development with nationally acclaimed producer Tanith Glynn-Maloney (Robbie Hood, She Who Must Be Loved), are comprised of director Edoardo Crismani (The Panther Within) and producer Gina Rings working with Lillian and Elaine Crombie, director Isaac Lindsay (Konya) and producer Scarlett Schrader teamed with Robert Fielding and Zaachariaha Fielding and for the third episode, a unique sibling situation will see sisters, director Pearl Berry and producer Lilla Berry work with sisters Taree and Caleena Sansbury.

Deadly Family Portraits was created under the SAFC’s Aboriginal Screen Strategy to enable practitioners from under-represented groups to create screen content and make their authorial voices heard while creating pathways for training, mentoring and professional development for the South Australian Aboriginal screen sector. The teams will be mentored by Change Media’s Carl Kuddel and SAFC Associate Executive Nara Wilson through the whole process.

Legal dispute settled over ex-Seven employee

A legal tussle between Seven and former sales exec Lisa Squillace, hired to become 10’s network sales director, has ended with Seven ordered to pay her nearly $70,000.

Squillace was fighting the non-compete period that would have stopped her joining 10 before the end of her non-compete period.

Squillace left her role as Seven’s director of program partnerships in October but she will not be able to join 10 until February 10. Her three months’ notice from Seven ends on December 26.

Mumbrella reports Seven originally offered to reduce Squillace’s non-compete period from six months to two, to begin at the end of her unpaid maternity leave period, meaning her start date with 10 would have been February.

The proceedings have now been dismissed with no order about legal costs. Seven and 10 declined to comment.

Courtney Act in SBS hunt for Eurovision star

Three more acts have been announced for Eurovision: Australia Decides in February.

Former Australian Idol drag queen Courtney Act, The Voice finalist Aydan Calafiore and teen newcomer Leea Nanos join the previously-announced Kate Miller-Heidke, Sheppard and Mark Vincent in competing to represent Australia in Tel Aviv next May.

Courtney Act, who also won Celebrity Big Brother UK and competed on RuPaul’s Drag Race, has also released her song, Fight for Love. 16-year-old singer-songwriter Leea Nanos becomes a wild card entry after her song submission blew SBS judges away.

Courtney Act said: “A sweet 16 years after Australian Idol I have the chance to show Australia how I have grown as an artist and a performer and I am so excited. To compete to represent Oz in Eurovision is second only to being on that stage in Tel Aviv and singing my lungs out for my country. I’ve sat at home every year since Guy Sebastian competed in 2015 and have been so keen to be a part of it. Now, this might be my chance!”

Aydan said: “It’s unbelievable to be participating in Eurovision – Australia Decides. Having been a fan of Eurovision, it’s really hard to comprehend that I am going to have a shot at representing our country at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019. I have such a supportive fan base and I am hoping that together we’ll go on this journey and see a new generation of Eurovision fans.”

Leea Nanos said: “Being involved in Eurovision – Australia Decides means everything to me and the reality hasn’t quite sunk in yet! Being the youngest and most inexperienced in the competition I know I’ll need to really bring my A-game to the stage. It’s unreal that I’ve got this opportunity to perform on the same stage as all of these high-profile Australian artists – artists I admire and aspire to be like. I feel truly honoured.”

Four more acts are yet to be revealed by SBS and Blink Television.

Tix are available here.
